Typeahead isn't showing suggestions
Last updated March 18, 2026
If you are not seeing ghost text while typing, work through these steps in order.
Check accessibility permission
This is the most common cause. Without Accessibility permission, Typeahead cannot read the text field you are typing in.
- Open System Settings.
- Go to Privacy & Security, then Accessibility.
- Check that Typeahead appears in the list and is toggled on.
- If the toggle is off, turn it on. You may need your Mac password.
- If Typeahead is not in the list, open it from Applications and it should appear.
Wait for the model to load
On first launch or after switching models, Typeahead loads the model into memory. This takes a few seconds. Type something short, pause, and wait to see if a suggestion appears.
Check that suggestions are enabled
Click the Typeahead icon in the menu bar. If suggestions are toggled off, turn them back on.
Try a different app
If suggestions work in one app but not another, the second app may be using a non-standard text field. See Which apps work with Typeahead for more detail. Most apps work, but a small number do not expose standard accessibility.
Restart Typeahead
Right-click the Typeahead icon in the menu bar and choose Quit. Relaunch it from Applications.
