What needs a connection.
Four things, and none of them carries your writing: activating your license key, a license check each time Typeahead starts, update checks if you leave them on, and the one-time download of the AI model. Everything that makes a suggestion, down to the window context and your writing styles, is already on your Mac.
The license check.
Each time Typeahead starts, it checks your license. If it can’t connect, it carries on with the license it already has. Lifetime keeps working offline. A monthly or yearly plan works offline until 7 days after its paid-through date.
The model download.
During setup, Typeahead downloads one model (leave about 4 GB free) and checks the file before using it. An interrupted download picks up where it left off. Switching to another model later means one more download, so do it while you’re online. The local AI page covers the models themselves.
Before you go offline.
Finish setup on a connection: activate your key and let the model download. Updates can wait until you’re back; nothing about suggesting depends on them.
The same, connected or not.
There’s no separate offline mode: suggestions always come from the model on your Mac, so the Wi-Fi doesn’t change them. What Typeahead reads, keeps and sends is on the privacy page.

No. Update checks need a connection, and they’re optional: you can turn automatic checks off in Settings. Typeahead keeps suggesting on the version you have, and picks up updates the next time you’re online.
