In Docs, open Tools › Accessibility and turn on screen reader support. That’s the whole setup.
Google Docs: the Tools menu, Accessibility, opens the Accessibility settings dialog, where “Turn on screen reader support” gets ticked. Typeahead works in Docs after that one-time setup.

Yes, after a one-time setup step: turn on screen reader support in Google Docs (Tools, then Accessibility) so Typeahead can see the text. After that, suggestions appear in grey at your cursor while you write in the document. Press Tab to take one.
Smart Compose is Google’s own suggestion feature in Docs, for work and school accounts. Once Docs is set up, Typeahead suggests the rest of your sentence in the style you set, brings back the lines you write most, and works the same way in Gmail, Notion and your other Mac apps. To turn Smart Compose off, open a document, choose Tools › Preferences and clear Show Smart Compose suggestions.
Typeahead reads text through the macOS Accessibility API, the same one screen readers use, and Google Docs shares a document’s text that way once screen reader support is on. You turn it on once.
