Typeahead vs ChatGPT: with you, or for you.

ChatGPT writes a draft when you ask it in a chat. Typeahead suggests the rest of your sentence as you type, in the app you’re in.

The short answer.

Choose ChatGPT if…

  • You want a first draft written from a prompt.
  • You want answers, research or ideas.
  • You want text you paste in rewritten.

Choose Typeahead if…

  • You want to write it yourself, a little faster.
  • You want suggestions right where you’re typing.
  • You want suggestions made on your Mac, not on a server.

Or use both: ChatGPT when you need ideas, Typeahead when you write the email.

Prompt and paste, or just type.

The same email at the same typing speed: asked of ChatGPT, or written in place.

ChatGPTPrompt and copy

Asking ChatGPT: you write a prompt with the facts, wait while it thinks, read back a long email in its words, ask for it shorter and more personal, then select the email and copy it out to paste where it's going.

TypeaheadAs you type

With Typeahead, in Notes: you type each thought and Typeahead suggests the rest of the phrase in grey. Tab takes it, the right arrow takes one word, and typing something else steers it. The same email, written in place.

Side by side.

Common questions

ChatGPT writes for you: you describe what you need in a chat, it drafts, and you copy the result to where it’s going. Typeahead writes with you: as you type in Mail, Slack, Notion or your browser, it suggests the rest of your sentence in grey at your cursor, and Tab takes it. The words stay yours, and the suggestions come from an AI model on your Mac.

For the everyday ones, often yes. Replies, follow-ups and quick updates are often quicker to write yourself with the end of each sentence suggested than to prompt, wait and paste. For a long first draft from a few notes, or ideas when you’re stuck, ChatGPT is the better tool, and you can use both.

Partly. Since July 2026, ChatGPT’s desktop app can act in your apps when you give it a task: Computer Use clicks and types for you. It still starts from a prompt, and you review what it did. Typeahead isn’t something you ask. It suggests the rest of your sentence as you type, in Mac apps with a standard text field, and you stay the author.

No, and that’s on purpose. Typeahead finishes sentences you start, from a word or two to a full sentence or more, depending on the length you pick. You stay the author: keep typing to steer a suggestion or ignore it, and Tab only when it says what you meant.

No. Suggestions are made by a model on your Mac, and Typeahead never sends your writing to a server. Its only network activity is license activation, a license check each time the app starts, optional update checks, and the one-time download of your AI model.

No. A license key turns Typeahead on, and there’s nothing to sign in to. OpenAI’s help center says the ChatGPT app for Mac asks you to sign in; signed out, ChatGPT works only on the web.
