What is a paraphrasing tool?

A paraphrasing tool restates a sentence or paragraph in different words while keeping its meaning. A good one goes beyond synonym swaps: it restructures the sentence and shifts the register, so the same idea can read as fluent, formal, casual, or academic depending on where the writing is headed.

One idea, different rooms.

A cover letter needs a different voice than a text message. A LinkedIn post needs a different voice than a research abstract. Manually reworking the same idea for different audiences is slow, and it's easy to lose the thread of what you meant the third time through.

Where it matters
Emails to different audiences, social captions versus formal reports, matching a brand voice, adapting reading level for a new audience.
What the Paraphrasing Tool does
Rewrites your text in a style you pick, fluent, formal, casual, or academic, while keeping your original meaning intact.

Paraphrase text in three steps.

  • Paste your text.

Drop in a sentence or a paragraph you want to rework, up to 1,500 characters at a time.

  • Pick a style.

Choose fluent, formal, casual, or academic tone for the rewrite.

  • Get your rewrite.

Copy the reworded version, structure and word choice varied, meaning intact.

Casual in, formal out.

What you paste

Quick heads-up: the report is running a couple of days late because we're still waiting on the Q2 numbers, but it should be worth the wait.

What you get back, formal style

A brief update: the report will arrive a few days late while we wait on the final Q2 figures. We expect the added time to be worth it.

An example rewrite. Your result will vary with your text.

Why not skip the second draft?

Typeahead suggests the rest of each sentence while you type, with starter writing styles closer to the register you want.

One voice across your apps. The same suggestions follow you from Mail to Slack to Notion, and they learn how you write on your Mac.

Common questions

A paraphrasing tool, or paraphraser, restates a sentence or paragraph in different words while keeping the original meaning. A thesaurus swaps single words. A good paraphraser rebuilds the sentence and adjusts the register, so the result reads naturally as formal, casual, or academic writing.

Yes. Paste it, choose Formal, and press Paraphrase Text. Formal drops contractions, tightens the wording, and keeps a measured tone. If the result is stiffer than you wanted, Fluent smooths the phrasing without changing how formal you sound.

The register of the rewrite. Fluent smooths the phrasing in your original tone, Formal removes contractions and tightens wording, Casual relaxes it into something you would send a colleague, and Academic makes it precise, objective, and hedged where that is appropriate. Your meaning stays the same in all four.

Yes. Each run takes up to 1,500 characters, around 250 words, and each visitor gets a set number of runs per day. There is no account or payment that lifts the limit. For a longer document, paraphrase one paragraph at a time.

Use the Paraphrasing Tool when the register has to change, for example a casual note that needs to become formal or academic. Use our Rewording Tool when you like the tone and only want fresher wording or a shorter version.

Not on its own, but it can slide into it. Paraphrasing is for finding your own words, not for hiding where an idea came from. If you're paraphrasing someone else's argument or research, you still need to cite the source.

It needs a connection. Your text travels to our AI provider, Google Gemini, which writes the paraphrase and sends it back. We don't store it, sell it, or use it to profile you. If you want writing help that works offline after setup, that is the Typeahead Mac app, which runs on your own machine.

Say it right the first time.

Typeahead finishes your sentences in the right register as you type, in your Mac apps. Less to paraphrase afterward.
