Privacy Policy

The short version

Typeahead runs entirely on your Mac. Your keystrokes, text, and suggestions never leave your computer. We have no servers that process your data, no telemetry, and no analytics inside the app. The website uses standard analytics and advertising services, described under Third-party services below. The only personal information we hold is what you give us when you buy a license.

Information we collect

At purchase

When you buy Typeahead, Stripe (our payment processor) collects your payment details and email address. We receive:

  • Your email address
  • A Stripe customer ID
  • Transaction metadata (date, amount, currency)
  • Your plan (lifetime, annual, or monthly) and, for a subscription, the date it’s paid through
  • A Stripe subscription ID, if you subscribe

We use your email to deliver your license key, send receipts and emails about your trial or subscription, and contact you about critical product updates (e.g. macOS compatibility). We do not send marketing emails unless you explicitly opt in.

At activation

When you activate your license, the app sends our licensing server your license key, an ID for your Mac (its hardware UUID), and your Mac’s model name (like “MacBook Air”) rather than the name you gave it, so a license knows which Macs it’s on. Versions before 2.6 send your Mac’s name instead. Deactivating a Mac in the app marks it inactive and frees its place on your license. The app re-checks the license when it starts and, for a subscription, when your Mac wakes and in the last few days before the plan ends. When you open the list of Macs in Settings, it asks our server which Macs are on your license. Apart from this, update checks, and the one-time model download, the app makes no network calls. No usage data or personal information is transmitted.

Free writing tools on this website

The free tools at typeahead.ai/tools are separate from the Mac app. Counters, checkers, and the typing test run entirely in your browser and send nothing to us. The AI tools (rewording, paraphrasing, AI humanizer, AI detector, hallucination detector, citation generator, and translator) send the text you submit to our AI provider, Google (Gemini API), to generate the result. We do not store that text or use it to build a profile of you. A bot check from Cloudflare (Turnstile) and a rate limit keyed to your IP address protect those tools from abuse.

During use

Typeahead processes all text locally using on-device language models. Your writing never touches a server. There is no telemetry, no crash reporting, no analytics, and no usage tracking of any kind.

macOS Accessibility API

Typeahead uses the macOS Accessibility API to read the text you type and insert autocomplete suggestions. This is the same API used by screen readers and other assistive technologies. The Accessibility permission is required for Typeahead to function, but the data it accesses is processed entirely on-device and is never stored, logged, or transmitted.

How we use your information

The limited information we collect is used to:

  • Deliver and activate your license
  • Send receipts and emails about your trial or subscription
  • Provide customer support when you contact us
  • Notify you of critical updates (e.g. macOS version compatibility)

We do not sell, rent, or share your information with third parties for marketing purposes.

Third-party services

We use the following third-party services to operate the website and the app:

  • Stripe — payment processing. Stripe’s handling of your payment data is governed by their Privacy Policy.
  • Sparkle — update checking. Typeahead periodically checks for software updates via the Sparkle framework. This transmits only the app version number and your macOS version to our update server. No personal data is included.
  • Meta — advertising measurement. We use the Meta Pixel and Conversions API to measure the performance of our advertising. Meta’s use of this information is governed by its Privacy Policy.
  • Google Analytics — website analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use our website. When you buy or start a trial, we also share a hashed version of your email with Google to measure our ads. Google’s use of this information is governed by its Privacy Policy.
  • Crazy Egg — website analytics. We use Crazy Egg to understand how visitors interact with our pages. Crazy Egg’s use of this information is governed by its Privacy Policy.

These services use cookies and similar technologies to collect information about your use of the website, such as the pages you view, your IP address, and your browser type. You can control cookies through your browser settings, and most ad or tracker blockers will prevent these services from running.

Our website also sets a functional cookie of its own:

  • ta_cur — remembers the currency for your region, so the prices you see are the ones you’d pay. It lasts 1 day.

Data retention

We retain your email and license information for as long as your license is active, so we can provide support and deliver updates. If you start a trial, we keep your Mac’s ID after it ends so each Mac gets one trial. We keep the record of your agreement to the subscription terms for 3 years. If you request deletion, we will remove your data within 30 days.

Your rights

You can, at any time:

  • Request a copy of the data we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate information
  • Request deletion of your data
  • Withdraw any consent you’ve given

Children’s privacy

Typeahead is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you by email. Continued use of Typeahead after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
