You type the start and Tab takes the rest; the right arrow takes a word at a time. Before you finish one suggestion the next is already being written, so it’s there the moment you need it. Lines you write often come back after two words, straight from what Typeahead has learned.

Typeahead runs on its own engine, built to be fast and light. Your keystrokes are handled first, on a thread of their own, so a slow app or a busy model never holds up your typing, and the model frees its memory when you stop. Suggestions follow the timing you pick: Instant, Balanced (the default) or Relaxed.
What Insights counts.
Settings › Insights shows three numbers: words accepted, keystrokes saved and time saved, for the week, the month or all time, with a chart and a breakdown by app. It keeps counts only, on your Mac, never the text, and Clear Usage Data wipes them.
How time saved is worked out.
From the keystrokes you saved, at a typing speed of 55 words a minute and five characters a word. How much faster you go depends on what you write and how often you take a suggestion, so your own Insights are the honest measure.
Other ways to type faster on a Mac.
Learn the editing shortcuts: Option-Delete removes a word, and Command-Left jumps to the start of the line. Set Text Replacements in System Settings › Keyboard for phrases you type exactly the same way every time. Use Dictation when talking is quicker than typing. Typeahead works alongside all three, finishing the sentences in between.
